EVE Online Hyperion Updates

eve

CCP Games have launched some big additions to agent missions and wormholes in the latest release for EVE Online, Hyperion.

In Hyperion, dangerous “Burner” pirates have started to arrive all over the universe. Trained by the five major pirate factions, these lone criminals hide behind space gates that only frigate-class ships can activate, making for a fresh alternative to the battleship warfare that dominates high-level agent missions. These optional but lucrative new missions mimic the type of battle more often found between players.

Hyperion also includes major changes to wormhole effects. Since wormholes were introduced into the game years ago, EVE players of all experience levels — always ready for a challenge — jumped headfirst into the unknown and carved out fragile refuges amidst a constantly shifting interstellar landscape. Among the changes:

  •     New wormhole connections have opened up, and those with Black Holes inside have become the de facto fast-skirmish wormholes.
  •     Class 4 wormhole systems have added another reliable exit wormhole, making them the perfect base from which to skirmish into other unknown systems while still providing a substantial income to those brave enough to stake their claim.
  •     Changes in the mass calculations of ships entering wormholes should provide some exciting skirmishes, as bigger ships find themselves drifting further from the safety of the entrance.

“Hyperion brings the first of many upcoming changes to core parts of EVE Online that let players explore the New Eden universe and clash with its inhabitants.” said Andie Nordgren, Executive Producer for EVE Online. “Missions, wormhole exploration, and incursions are an integral part of EVE’s player-driven vicious cycle of harvesting, creation and destruction, with players of all levels sewing the fabric of our massive universe with their ambitions.”

Hyperion brings other changes to EVE, including more ship and module balancing, improved UI like sharable overviews and tooltips, new cybernetic arms and “retro” headwear, and the opening of planetary colonies in null security space to those outside the sovereign alliances that control them.

Hyperion follows Crius as the third update in a major shift for EVE development, from two expansions per year to around 10 releases annually, as CCP delivers more content, more frequently, to its ever growing player-base. Hyperion is available free to all EVE Online subscribers and trial users.

Further information about Hyperion can be found here, and the Hyperion in-development video.

Twitch sold to Amazon for $970m

Popular game streaming portal Twitch has been sold to Amazon for an outstanding $970m (£585m). In an letter to the community , Emmett Shear (CEO) thanked the members standing by and supporting the site in its current three years existence.

Letter from the CEO
August 25, 2014

Dear Twitch Community,

It’s almost unbelievable that slightly more than 3 years ago, Twitch didn’t exist. The moment we launched, we knew we had stumbled across something special. But what followed surprised us as much as anyone else, and the impact it’s had on both the community and us has been truly profound.

Your talent, your passion, your dedication to gaming, your memes, your brilliance – these have made Twitch what it is today. Every day, we strive to live up to the standard set by you, the community. We want to create the very best place to share your gaming and life online, and that mission continues to guide us.

Together with you, we’ve found new ways of connecting developers and publishers with their fans. We’ve created a whole new kind of career that lets people make a living sharing their love of games. We’ve brought billions of hours of entertainment, laughter, joy and the occasional ragequit. I think we can all call that a pretty good start.

Today, I’m pleased to announce we’ve been acquired by Amazon. We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster. We’re keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch.

I personally want to thank you, each and every member of the Twitch community, for what you’ve created. Thank you for putting your faith in us. Thank you for sticking with us through growing pains and stumbles. Thank you for bringing your very best to us and sharing it with the world. Thank you, from a group of gamers who never dreamed they’d get to help shape the face of the industry that we love so much.

It’s dangerous to go alone. On behalf of myself and everyone else at Twitch, thank you for coming with us.

Emmett Shear, CEO

What’s next for Twitch? We can only imagine.

Lifeless the Zombie Survival MMOFPS Goes Alpha Today

Lifeless

Lifeless is a multi-player FPS zombie survival game. In Lifeless, you have to do whatever is necessary to survive in a vast and dangerous world, filled with challenging and intelligent zombies. Working with other players is a smart choice, though attacking other players has its place as well. Lifeless strives to offer an experience that no other zombie survival game has yet to offer. If you want to stay alive, you’ll need to think on your toes and make intelligent decisions; decisions which affect not just you, but everyone around you, players and NPCs.

Today Rigid-Soft Studios released the first public Alpha build. The game is ready for purchase and there are two options; A standard option at $25 to play the game and receive all future updates, or a deluxe edition at $40 with some extra perks.

We originally intended Lifeless to be free-to-play but after exploring it a little more, we decided it would be best to just make it a one time purchase. This is for several reasons but the main ones being the cost of server maintenance, support and development. The other reason is because we quickly realised we would have to turn Lifeless into a pay-to-win game if we even wanted to survive the first month with all the costs and that is something we are strictly against!

I’m always happy to hear when developers are against pay to win, it’s a veritable gold mine but makes games life-less pretty quick (pun intended, couldn’t resist – ex). I think much more people are likely to play with a one time purchase, compared to monthly subs or micro transactions (pay to win).

No More Bukkit for Minecraft?

minecraft

Yesterday morning EvilSeph posted a thread titled “It’s time to say…” over at the Bukkit forums, click the link to read the whole thing, but EvilSeph goes on to say that Bukkit has had one hell of a ride and it’s come to the point where they are stopping development. That they wont be upgrading along with Minecraft 1.8

From the get go we were plagued with issues and obstacles we needed to overcome…….

Fast forward to more recent times and Mojang have made the abrupt and sudden decision to start enforcing their EULA in an effort to quell the outlook of Minecraft being pay to win. While I can completely understand where they are coming from and support their mission to shut down pay to win servers, it’s difficult to be supportive of their abrupt turn-around with enforcing rules they consciously decided not to enforce since the start of Minecraft. On top of this, there are also clauses – which it would be irresponsible of us not to be aware of – within the now suddenly enforced EULA that directly affect the Bukkit project……

At this point in time, I think it’s safe to say that it’s no longer worth it for us to put up a fight when it comes to keeping Bukkit and modding alive. With large and significant changes coming in Minecraft 1.8 that we’ll be hard pressed to provide support for and the lack of support from Mojang with updates since acquiring our original core team (Mojang used to provide us with mappings to speed up the update process), there is little motivation for us to continue limping on across various aspects of the project. From a project management standpoint, it’s become increasingly difficult to find willing and able individuals to help out the project on a purely voluntary basis due to people losing interest in Minecraft or people looking for something more. Simply put, this was ultimately the final nail in the coffin…….

It’s a heartfelt letter and those are only clips, but it should give you an idea. It gets more interesting when shortly after, Jens Bergensten (from Minecraft) tweeted;

Warren over at bukkit seems to have forgotten that the project was bought by Mojang over two years ago, and isn’t his to discontinue.

EvilSeph posted their own reply;

Yes, Mojang does own Bukkit. Them acquiring us was a condition to being hired. If Mojang want to continue Bukkit, I’m all for it 🙂

Quite a lot of servers are running Bukkit, what do you think is going to happen?

Hearthstone Curse of Naxxramas Frostwyrm Lair – Now Open

Hearthstone

The chilling final wing of Naxxramas has been unlocked and awaits you at the pinnacle of the necropolis.  Frostwyrm Lair is now open and it seems a certain Archlich has got a bone to pick with you.

Frostwyrm Lair is the final wing of Naxxramas—home to Kel’Thuzad and his powerful undead frostwyrm, Sapphiron. Just like the other wings, victory over these heat-deprived hooligans will reward you with all-new Hearthstone cards.

Kel’Thuzad is the final boss of Naxxramas, and he eagerly awaits the opportunity to strike down all interlopers who have dared to step into his precious floating necropolis. If you thought the other bosses of Naxxramas didn’t play fair, remember—you’re in his lair now! A victory over Kel’Thuzad will reward you with two Shade of Naxxramas cards to add to your collection.

Defeating all of the bosses within Frostwyrm Lair will add the Legendary Kel’Thuzad card to your collection.

Frostwyrm Lair also features the final Class Challenge that will become available to those who have defeated the bosses on Normal Mode. Overcome this Challenge and you’ll be rewarded with a shiny new class-specific card to expand your repertoire.

For those of you seeking out a serious challenge, Heroic Frostwyrm Lair becomes available after you’ve defeated all of the bosses on Normal Mode. Heroic Mode bosses are significantly more difficult than their normal versions, and the Heroic Frostwyrm Lair bosses will freeze all that oppose them in their tracks!
